Stop! Don’t buy that pattern just yet. Take a minute and ask yourself…
“is it the pattern or do I just love the yarn?!”
I have fallen victim to the siren lure of a super, fuzzy, squishy looking sweater pattern only to be disappointed later when I realized that the pattern was nothing special, but I had just fallen in love with the yarn.
You know the look… two sock or fingering weight yarns held together, usually in soft pastels or neutral tones, one frequently a fuzzy mohair or alpaca, knit a bit loose to create a hazy, dreamy cloud of a sweater. Ahhh. But the reality is… I’m horribly allergic to ALL animal fibers, and even if I wasn’t, the cost of that dreamy mix of yarns would exceed my fiber budget for the whole year.
So I do what so many of us knitters do… I swap the yarn for some else. Something obtainable and useable (and dare I say washable) but the results are often meh. Because the truth was… it wasn’t the pattern I fell in love with… it was the fiber fantasy.
